i worked at that school for 4 years leaving a couple of months before bell got the heave ho. we predicted it would all go pear shaped. nice to know we were right!
i would, however, like to stick up for sriracha as a place. not nearly that bad, at least when i lived there. sure the traffic was getting pretty bad, but it was a good location – close enough to bangers if you want to go up, and close enough to samet likewise. personnally i don’t really rate pattaya much, unless you are inclined for a bit of horizontal refreshment. they do have a big department store with a tops supermarket in sriracha, and you can even buy cheese there!
Things have been changing of late at Assumption Sriracha, and it’s really not that bad.
There are some new brothers (the school bosses) who are pro-active and even step inside a classroom and teach, the few egos that were here before have gone and there’s a good group of teachers at the school. It’s also a Cambridge ESOL testing centre now.
The conditions are reasonable (starting salary 35k, BUPA, 9 weeks holiday etc) and class sizes range from 55 down to 16.
I’m not saying everything is perfect, but a few of these comments relate to some time in the past and I thought a more up-to-date opinion would be useful.
I agree with exBell that Sriracha is a cess pit, but then if Pattaya is a redeeming feature we must have differing views on life!
Wondering – you get paid 35K for ??? hours of classroom work daily. Your located between Bangkok and Pattaya which auto-matically means most people (farangs) are out of their element/s (other than for a vacation; some work with their backpacks still on their backs). Chong Buri is kinda a pit stop to Pattaya or Bangkok (comming the opposite end). Therefore the cost of living is much lower than BKK.
As teachers, do you rotate your classrooms or are you the one in charge of your classrooms. I realize and understand 90% of Westerners that teach English rotate from room to room and the Thai teachers run their classes. (Who has ownership?)
Are you required or expected to run an extra curricular activity such as a coach of the school sports…?
Do you provide your own lesson plan, or does the school dictate to you what is to be taught learned (all school have additional attivities during and throughout the school year). After all we are the ones choosing to live and teach in Thailand because we want to…
What is the guideline for the old heave ho? It sounds like, if you stand your grounds if you feel your right – then you are targeted as a “trouble maker”.
What about pay issues? I see zero complaints other than low pay… What about the provided houseing according to the recruitement page? It is some typical small Thai appartment (hole in the wall that use to be a short time room?
Just wondering – so much complaints yet the ACS make all look impressive and a poster to excellence. All the “farangs” panted a pretty picture as well.
Last statement, I thing we all can remember that most all school have idiots in charge be it in the Administration, Staff, or amoungst the teachers.
Just wondering…
I can answer a few of your questions, in no particular order.
the housing is a 5 min walk away, clean, new and with air-con.
english teachers make all their own lesson plans and decide what is taught.
the teachers typically have four classes they teach five times a week. Most classes get five English lessons a week – or 15 if they are in EP.
Like you say the cost of living here is cheap and accommodation is free, so it’s not a bad deal.
So who is the new brother at Sriracha?
Bro Sakda, far better than the last guy, can actually talk to this one and get a response.
This was sent to the Bangkok Post and sent to me as well:
Montfort – Assumption what you are going to do about this issue?
I agree with JANICE WONGSURAWAT (Bangkok Post, Post Bag, 17 July 2009) that Thai “schools can’t even educate.” I am a parent and I was told that Montfort Primary School English Programme Chiang Mai has Thai teachers whom are selling answers to the exams in their after school classes. I asked my wife if this could be possible so she called a Thai teacher at Montfort Primay and asked if our son could be given the answers to his upcoming exams. The Thai teacher, without hesitation said sure she has a copy of the test and to just bring our son over to their house and pay for the extra “instruction” and they’ll be sure to pass their upcoming exams. This is a PRIMARY school! How can a supposedly “reputable” school allow their teachers to give answers away to exams in exchange for money. This issue has been brought to senior management’s attention before with absolutely no result in fact, many Thai teachers are giving the answers away to English Programme exams this very weekend even though the school has closed for five days because of the H1N1 flu.
FRANKLY UNBELIEVABLE.
I have heard good things about Assumption. However, the problem that most of the foreign teachers have is the low pay. You can only survive on 35,000 a month. That has been the problem in the past with getting good teachers. I have a Degree in Education, certified and licensed Teacher in Texas, S. Korea and Thailand (Yes, I have it). My specialization is in English and Reading but I am certified to teach all subjects grades 1-8. I also have 31 years of teaching experience. I will not consider a job for less than 85,000 a month. Luckily, I make more than that. But I would consider Assumption if the money was right. I recommend the school for being a school.
Brother Sakda is a decent guy. You’re lucky that you don’t have Vinai (currently at Assumption College Samutprakarn). The money is good. The students know they can’t fail, so the majority of them don’t care about learning. It’s basically viewed as a school for rich kids and laughed at by others. Teaching at ACSP was fine until Brother Vinai came and changed everything up. Now moral is very low due to the constant loss of teachers and rumors of who will be fired. Vinai constantly tries to pit the Thai teachers against the foreign teachers, which just adds fuel to the fire. The students are also viciously beaten everyday for minor offenses. Overall, it’s a horrible work environment. Some teachers will most likely be leaving soon, so for those that are interested, feel free to apply. They’re always looking for new teachers. This is just for ACSP. I am not sure how the other Assumptions doing.
To Concerned Parent: Every Assumption school pumps the students/parents for money. It’s a business first and education comes somewhere after dancing/singing/etc.
Assumption College Bangrak is a very corrupt organization that manages people with fear. A contract doesn’t mean much and honoring it is not the Thai Catholic way if they feel things were “subject to change”. For example, you have been at the school too long and we can hire someone with a lower salary.
The school was quite dehumanizing and actually like working in a factory. You were not allowed to have water in the class or even bring food in a bag to your office. Even criminals get bread and water. At the end of every year you never new if you would have a job or not and they enjoyed creating fear about this. If they let you go or you chose to move on to something else they would not pay you the bonus at the end of the year even though you worked 12 months and honored a contract.
Lazy students are recruited and chosen over good students because of family name or family money. Therfore, the idea that Thailand is a country of merit doesn’t hold true in this school. Assumption College actually provides a disservice to the youth of Thailand as they turn away many good students for lazy ones. Penalty fees are actually quite attractive to the school so a lazy students fa,ily will have to pay these to get into the school and even more if the kids grades are bad.
