One of the cool things that some school are starting to do is provide their teachers custom tote bags. This is a no brainer, especially in corporate teaching work. Teachers are out there using them and are a walking advertisement. Forget getting a teacher to wear a sandwich board, but they jump at the chance to walk around with a free bag. I expect to see even more custom bags out there over the next year or so.

If you are looking for a return to the US after a teaching stint abroad then you might be worried about the job market and general economy back home. While much of the US is reeling still from the great recession, it’s not all gloom. A friend of mine just headed back to Texas and things are still going quite well. I finally took the plunge and picked up a small HP netbook last week. After using it for a few days, I can’t believe how I was able to live without it. These little netbooks are like a godsend to travelers like me. They are a great way to keep in touch and keep working no matter where I am. They are so light that you don’t really even remember you have them with you. I don’t why it took me so long to get one. If you are looking for a cheap, but functional computer then you really need to be looking at them.

I am big on making a personal brand as a way to get ahead in teaching and make a mark in the teaching profession. One of the ways that you might accomplish this in the US is with promotional items. I don’t know this would work abroad in the teaching profession, but it sure would be interesting to see someone who has done it successfully. I’d love to hear other ideas as well.

Missing A Nice Fire

One thing I really miss when I travel abroad are those Amish fireplaces that seem to cropping up more and more. Not only do they heat up the house, but they look so warm and inviting. You really can’t find them elsewhere even though they would be awesome in Mexico City during the winter when it gets a bit nippy in the evening and downright cold in the morning.
