I had a friend who wanted to do a TEFL course. He did all the required work. I saw his lesson plans. He is a native speaker and an impressive individual.
He received the lowest grade in the course and was upset for weeks.
Non-native speakers including those from Eastern Europe and the Philippines were given higher marks . It seemed incredible to me.
It was just an introductory course but now I recommend AUA’s course rather than that of ECC. Previously, I had recommended their CELTA course to people who had degrees, were native speakers, and were interested in TESL. No more. Luckily he moved beyond this and is now successfully employed at a “B” level international school here in SEA making more than any of his former evaluators.
I went to work at ECC in Big C Rachadamri. And I must say I enjoyed working there even though the pay was horrible. But I went in knowing they pay so whatever. Then out of no where they decide its ok to change my pay. Completely unprofessional. I was so disappointed as I was enjoying teaching my students. I told them I couldn’t settle with the rip off of the price and they shrugged their shoulder and said, “fine”.
And I must say they they don’t care at all for the students or anyone else for that matter. All it’s about for them is the money…
So I rate it poorly too.
Oh and I forgot to mention. Because I was somewhat of a newbie they sent me to the worst schools to teach at and giving me misleading information.
Just a comment for other users to reflect on 27 Year USA’s comment above: The CELTA program generally only awards three passing grades, “Pass,” “Pass B,” and “Pass A.” Most students finish the course with a “Pass.” A small percentage of students receive a “Pass B” (higher than Pass) and only exceptional students receive a “Pass A.” Once you are finished with the course, your grade should not influence your job options–having the certification is much more important than the “Pass A.”
Don’t get a job with them even if you’re desperate! They’re a total nightmare, low wages, 1 day off a week, terrible scheduling and whole bunch of poor, disillusioned souls working for them. Do you want to teach sugar-binging kids in a shopping mall whilst being disturbed by the constant insanity of toy car sirens? Do you want to be patronised by ignorant, disingenuous staff who bought or cheated their way through their own eduation? If ECC is your only option of staying in Thailand then leave – and if you ask Garth, the academic director, for help or advice he’ll only insult you. He’s a monkey in charge of a zoo! They have no interest in teaching English, it’s a money oriented business, pure and simple. Zero out of 10 for professionalism.
whole thing is a scam, i attended their tefl course and they passed all the foreigners who were given the course free
because they signed with their company and failed me one of about only 3 who actually payed for this scam.
there are no proper tests and the class was let off hours early even though they are being payed for this.
obviously to many people are letitng this garth monkey and greedy salesman paul get away with this.
but their time is running short
