The school`s official name is Hamer Sharp. It is a small franchise school with two offices that I know of with classrooms, the other classes are offered on sites of the corporate offices of their clients for courses in Business English.
As I understand it, the school is owned by Patricia Hamer, a Mexican national with whom I have spoken to three times by phone.
The two school sites are on Melchor Ocampos LA PLAZA DE LAS ESTRELLAS and a second one on the Pereferico Anillo near the Metro station Cuatro Caminos. Enrollment at both schools is somewhat spotty. The bulk of the student enrollment is with large multinational corporations around the city and classes are usually held in the corporate buildings of the clients. Clients include Telefonica/Movistar and MetroRed among many others. I understand there are a total of 7 franchisees to the business. I worked with two.
With the one at the PLAZA I taught a TOEFL Saturday afternoon class consisting of one private student. I was never hired directly by the manager of the school, but was given my assignment by the head teacher who had been teaching the class. Despite repeated efforts on my part to speak with the manager concerning student cancellation policy, I was never able to schedule a meeting with her. I was continuously rebuffed as she would spend hours on the phone selling the program to prospective students.
In the three months I taught the class, the student showed up for a total of 6 classes. On several occasions I was text messaged not to come to class as the student had cancelled at the last minute at the very time I was in transit to the class. On another 3 occasions the student completely failed to show up to the class and I was present, waiting for him for an hour and a half. Payment for my services was never on time and was as much as two months late at the end of my working for them. I was never paid for classes I attended but the student did not, not even partially.
The other franchise was with Telefonica and MetroReds company classes in Santa Fe and Polanco respectively. Policy had it with that franchise that the class had to be cancelled 24 hours in advance to absolve the client from paying and teachers had to be notified immediately. There never was a problem with this. Problems did arise, however, with a shifting date of payment, and despite the initial promise that monthly payments would be on the first Friday of the month, payments went out whenever the boss got around to doing the books. One month I was even paid on the 14th and never was I paid on time.
However the problems were even greater in that the boss did not get educational materials to the students nor the teachers on time. I had to wait 3 1/2 weeks for the second CD to Market Leader and had to skip entire pages of the book to circumvent the problem. In that time, twice a week I reminded the academic coordinator either by text message, voice mail or email that I needed the CD. Students were in an uproar and insisted on cancelling the class 15 hours before the end of the contract and I was blamed for the loss of the class.
In another class, entire sections of the teachers book were missing and even after constant reminder was still missing 20 pages by the time the class finished.
I rate this school a 2.
