Before I accepted a job with the Umar, I visited the campus, met the teachers, and had a terrific time. I look forward to my start date next month. After teaching in Mexico for three years the big draw for me was the savings plan and medical insurance. While both do not meet 1st world standards, these benefits make me feel a little more secure financially and with my health.

Though the university is pleasant and the conditions are fine as far as professional development is concerned the UMAR leaves a lot to be desired.

The English department is generally run by hand-picked individual who lack any TEFL management experience, skills or knowledge. They simply lack the knowledge to help teaching staff in their day to day tasks or to create any learning strategy to benefit the students. They simply lurch from one poor decision to another wasting students’ and teachers’ time semester after semester. They chop and change books without any consideration for students’ levels.

One semester they came up with the bright idea of running half the classes with completely mixed level classes. The management of the university is dictatorial and the rector decided that all chairs are to be bolted to the floor in the classrooms – hardly conducive to a satisfactory teaching or learning experience. Despite the teachers’ concerns regarding this the Heads of the Language department have consistently lacked the courage and professionalism to even bring this up with the rector.
